Nutrition

Scallop meat is prized for its tender, sweet, and buttery flavor profile. The adductor muscle, which is the only edible part of the scallop, has a delicate, almost creamy texture when cooked properly. Scallops are often described as having a “melt-in-your-mouth” quality, owing to their soft, succulent flesh. Their flavor is sometimes compared to that of lobster or crab, with a clean, marine taste that is neither overly fishy nor overpowering. Scallops are incredibly versatile and can be prepared in a wide variety of ways, from searing and sautéing to baking and grilling, each method highlighting their exceptional culinary qualities.

Scallops are particularly rich in the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are crucial for heart and brain health. This type of shellfish also provides generous amounts of vitamins B12 and B6, as well as minerals like selenium, zinc, and copper. Consuming scallop meat can help support cognitive function, immune system health, and energy production due to its impressive nutrient profile. As a lean, low-calorie protein, scallops make a wonderful addition to a balanced, nutritious diet.

Scallops can’t be frozen live. You need to cook them first or remove the meat from the shell and then freeze them.

Size: around 100g

Storage: Keep refrigerated at 0° to 4° and consume within 3 days after opening the sealed pack. Consume before the sell-by date.

Advices

Scallops can be steamed, fried, or grilled but should be cooked gently and only for a very short time or their delicate flavor and texture will be spoiled. Steam them in wine with aromatics as you would mussels, or wrap them in prosciutto and grill or fry them for a few minutes. Scallops go well with Asian ingredients: try pan-frying them in oil with ginger and fresh coriander. They’re also a good complement to hearty flavors such as bacon, chorizo, black pudding, or watercress. Take care not to over-cook them: serve as soon as they are firm and opaque.

Nutrition

Scallops are an exceptionally nutrient-dense seafood, providing a concentrated source of high-quality protein. A 3-ounce serving of scallops contains around 20 grams of protein, making them an excellent lean protein choice. In addition to protein, scallops are low in calories and fat while being rich in beneficial vitamins and minerals like vitamin B12, selenium, and zinc. The low calorie and fat content, combined with the abundant protein, make scallops a fantastic option for those looking to incorporate more healthy, lean proteins into their diet. Compared to many other types of seafood, scallops stand out for their exceptional nutritional profile that supports overall health and wellness.
